There are many different definitions of an "open relationship". Some couples play together, some play separately. most insist on condoms with any person outside the relationship, so that they can continue to have unprotected sex with one another.

Depending on the frequency of the "extra-mural activities", you might consider getting a regular HIV test together as a couple either every 6 months or annually. this works as a safeguard to protect each other. Also have an agreement to immediately inform one another if one of you has been in risky encounter. You owe it to yourself and your partner!
